Sadly I suspect you're more than right - and all the governments want to to is kick the can down the road and be seen to have a "clean watch".
Interest rates go up even marginally and the shit will hit the fan big time (and I suspect those in charge actually know this but lack the will-power to actually address the root causes - and there ARE more than one, something many can't or won't get their head round.)
Supply of homes has got to be brought more in line with demand. If the government can't convince the private sector to build, and flatly refuses to take on the task itself, then demand must be reduced - there are no other parameters in the equation.
Immigration (from wherever) rally IS the elephant in the room. Curbing it will NOT solve the homelessness problem (overnight, or completely) but it will go a considerable way to starting to manage the problem.
Shouty snowflakes, however, see this simply as a chance to "bash" the government and are quite happy to prevent a solution being rolled out (and, as a direct result, people to remain on the streets) if they feel it furthers their own personal aims.
Pull up the drawbridge. Take stock. Implement a solution. Determine how many outsiders the country can accommodate without degrading what exists. Let that number - and ONLY that number - in. Repeat as necessary.
Playing "god"? Yeah, perhaps. But God's a cunt, too.

Smarty pants I wouldn't disagree, society seems to have been heading in the direction of the have's and the have not's for at least a decade now. I can see this country ending up like the US eventually with extreme poverty and extreme wealth with not much in between.

Bullet - I don’t think we’ve seen nothing yet, it’s a massive problem world wide and homeless communities are growing so fast at the moment in towns and cities all over the country, I’ve noticed a big difference of late. Birmingham/Manchester/Liverpool are particularly bad, but still not yet anywhere near as bad as some European cities, Paris/Madrid etc

Bumped into an old mate hadn't seen for 25 yrs got chatting and he mentioned two brothers old school mates who I lost touch with. One became an alcoholic and ended up on the street and died 54, his brother 56 died of a heart attack two weeks after the funeral.
Could happen to anyone.

8 million people one pay check away from being unable to pay for their home
The YouGov survey of over 2000 working adults who pay housing costs found that 35% - equivalent to 8.6 million people – could not pay their rent or mortgage from their savings for more than a month. Alarmingly, 4.4 million of these (18%) said that if they lost their jobs this April and couldn’t secure a new one right away, they couldn’t pay their rent or mortgage at all.
The research reveals that families with children are in the most precarious situation of all. 43% could not pay for their home for more than a month, and nearly a quarter (23%) could not meet their payments at all. Overall, 3.9 million British families may be just one pay check away from losing the family home.

MiM - One of my mates parents used to ask me if I could help get him a flat etc, all very sad but I couldn’t put myself in that position because I new it would go wrong. They took him back in and one night he came down stairs and sat with them and his younger brother on the sofa with his sleeve rolled up and a belt still round his arm, totally oblivious. I bumped into him not so long ago and after 20+ years of addiction and street life it’s not a pretty sight. He picked my 2 year old boy up (much to my mrs horror) and I thought how sad it was that someone no different to me has ended up living the life he has. He was not someone you would of put money on living that life at all.

One of my old best mates ended up on the streets for a while. Weirdly he seemed to actually kind of enjoy it. A life totally free of responsibility. His problems were booze and legal highs. Totally sorted himself out now though. Might sound proper cunty but that time spent on the streets probably did him good, and made him realise how low his life had got and how he needed to sort himself out, and he has and now he's a different man.

Manchester is absolutely chock full of homeless. Always strikes me how young they are as well. Most homeless folk I saw most of my life were generally older (35-40+, Or at least looked it) but most of the ones in Manchester look like teenagers. Dunno if this is just me getting old or what though.
Easy to blame the government for this sort of stuff but unfortunately I reckon Norman is right. And most of these people would be homeless regardless of who's in power. Some fuckers are just in the business of ruining themselves. Others are genuinely unlucky and tragic.
Either way I wouldn't wish that life on anyone, especially this time of year.

Fair play to you getting back on your feet norm. I have had Friends fall into this position, but without exception it was always down to class As, some Have made it back to normality some haven’t

All on the street are fucked up..like I said.
Funding for Alcohol or class A is all that concerns..that's a fact...broken people..if you know the coo ..you either give or don't.
Thanks to the likes of St Mungo and other charities. .some are able to escape that life..if they want too.
That's the thing..so many are so Feeble minded and weak it's an impossible task..they simply don't give a shot.
I was close to this..I saw the end..giving up.

Also..being the stereotypical image of a homeless person doesn't help matters..you'll be suprised.
I was homeless..St Mungo's got me back..and I wasn't a 'fuckin tramp' or whatever you imagine homeless to mean
I have been pissed on..literally. .and had my trotters taken off me by pissed up youngens...they were pissed..I understand that.

Most are mentally ill..and royally fucked up in one way or another..to the point where most don't know any other way of living.

Yeah that sounds about right lowermarsh.
I've travelled to a lot of places around the world and seen some really poor homeless people, but she is the single worst example I've ever seen.
The stench was awful. I'm not sure 20 baths would have been enough to be honest.
I needed 2 after being half a carriage away from her.

Met a fella in the 70's who made a fortune out of these types. Owned about six off licenses near Deptford bridge as the dossers from the 750 bed Carrington House would spend their dole in them as soon as they cashed their giro at the PO.

That rancid tramp was an Indian woman, she was an established fixture on the Victoria Line from at least 98 through to 05, maybe longer.
A packed train would pull into a platform during the peak with one empty carriage and it would always be her.
Sometimes she'd sit on a platform bench, I was unable to go within 20 metres or I'd start wretching.
Saw someone talk to her for a long time once, respect to that person, they must have been.a nurse I would imagine.
Apparently she was disowned by her family after arranged marriage issues and ended up mental health issues hence the stink problem.
Would imagine if would take around 15 - 20 baths in a row to deal with that kind of thing. Burn the clothes, burn the towels.
Poor cow.
